If you already have NXPowerLite for Servers 9 installed please consider the following aspects about how your existing configuration and data will be migrated.
Migration parameters
- Migration only works from NXPowerLite for File Servers 9 to NXPowerLite Server 10. Contact us for advice on how to migrate from earlier versions.
- The actual migration event happens when the new version of the software is registered. Any settings applied when in Evaluation mode will be lost.
Specific configuration migrated
The following configuration settings will be migrated and appear in the new software:
- Included and excluded folders including any applied rules
- ‘Optimization settings’ profiles
- ‘Files to include’ profiles
- Scheduling profiles
- Preferences
- History of files processed files
- Live reports
- Historical reports
- Custom registry settings
Considerations before running v10 after migration
NXPowerLite server includes changes to existing features and new optimization settings. These change the compression applied to files and are enabled by default in any migrated Optimization setting profile. In particular, we would draw your attention to the following settings which change existing compression behavior, and if required, can be disabled in Optimization settings profiles.
Remove compatibility with Word 2007
This can significantly reduce the size of Word files and is completely safe if your users all use Office 2010 or later. It is on by default.
Clean excess cell formatting in Excel files
This occurs when ALL of the blank cells in a sheet end up getting individual formatting applied. NXPowerLite can remove this excessive formatting which can dramatically reduce the file size without affecting the content or data. On by default.
Support for new-style embedded objects within PowerPoint
NXPowerLite can now compress all types of embedded objects in PowerPoint. Included in 'Flatten Embedded Objects' feature.
Preserve EXIF orientation flag in JPEG
When NXPowerLite removes EXIF data it will now retain the orientation flag, so images will always be displayed with the correct orientation. On by default.
Apply new compression features to files already compressed by NXPowerLite
To apply any of the above compression features to files that have already been processed by NXPowerLite, you will need to Clear File History.
For example, if you want to apply the compression feature 'Remove compatibility with Word 2007' to files already processed, you need to clear the history of the Word files to ensure they are not skipped. You will also want to clear the 'Compression failure' section which contains Word files that could not be reduced by previous versions.
Configuration not migrated
Windows service user account configured
It is not possible to maintain the configured user account that the NXPowerLite File Server Windows service uses. This will need to be reconfigured after the installation of NXPowerLite Server 10. See Configuring the NXPowerLite Windows Service for more details.
Current day's reported results data
It was not technically possible to migrate reported results data since midnight the night on the day of registration. To ensure all reported data is transferred, stop NXPowerLite v9 and leave 24 hours before installing v10.
Migration failure
In the unlikely event that migration fails the software will enter a fatal error state and will not allow access to the Dashboard. Follow the steps detailed below to retry migration and if this process fails, contact us.
If migration fails, the Application event log (which can be viewed using the Windows Event Viewer) will contain a recent error event from NXPowerLite for File Servers, with event ID 2088. If this is not the case, contact us for assistance.
